Bar B Que began on the first days of the now
world famous "Sabinal
Wild Hog Festival". Former president, Irma Rodriguez,
Paramedic, of the Sabinal EMS was asked, by the Sabinal Lions
Club who host the event, if she would like to do a fund raiser
by selling barbecue plates at the, once, one day festival.
We started out by cooking wild hogs, appropriate for the the
festival, that were trapped and donated to the EMS by local
ranchers. Some folks loved our Smoked Wild Hog meat, while
others did not want to touch it. The next year we
decided to continue cooking the wild hog meat and also smoked
some briskets for the not so brave. While our hog meat was
still a success our briskets were becoming quite popular.
Then, and only then, did we start getting some confidence about
our briskets being good enough to sell. About that time,
Robert Sr., who had been working with the Union Pacific Rail
Road, then Southern Pacific, took from his savings and purchased
two acres of land next to the city park where the festival was
held. With the help of family members and close
friends, we worked on clearing the wooded property and the
construction of the building as it currently stands today.
We worked evenings, weekends and any extra time we could find.
It took over a year to finish the project. We could not
have done any of this without the help we received from family
members and many of our close friends during the first days at
the festival and on up to the Grand opening on July 1, 2001.
If you are wondering how we came up with the
name "R
- Bar B Que", well, the business was established
with the 3 Rodriguez
brothers, Robert,
Rube, and
Rene, in mind. Intended as being a
barbecue stand on your way to Garner State Park or the Frio
River. "Our Barbecue Stand", our first choice for a name,
never became a barbecue stand. It quickly grew and has
become "R
- Bar B Que" restaurant. Our hospitality
was well liked but we could not serve just barbecue to our
customers day in and day out. We adjusted and now offer
breakfast and various other dishes other than just our delicious
barbecue. Just keep in mind that...........
Is Better!
